Bishop Speechly College for Advanced Studies established in 2006 on the lovely Buchanan Campus, Pallom, Kottayam, a sprawling campus founded by CMS missionaries, is a conducive learning haven with state-of-the-art infrastructure facilities.

Named after Bishop John Martindale Speechly, the first Anglican Bishop of the Diocese of Central Travancore, the College is owned by the CSI Madhya Kerala Diocese and administered by a Governing Council with Rt. Rev. Dr Malayil Sabu Koshy Cherian, Bishop, CSI Madhya Kerala Diocese, as Chairman.

Speechly College is founded with the noble vision that education is a transformational experience where students learn, interact, engage in activities, and enjoy. The college strives towards integrating curricular and extracurricular activities to transform young minds into complete human beings, fruitful in their chosen paths.

Bishop John Martindale Speechly

Bishop John Martindale Speechly

(1836 - 1898)

Born on 13 November 1836 in Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire, Speechly was educated at St John's College, Cambridge, and ordained in 1860.

In 1862 he reached India as a missionary of Church Missionary Society and was stationed at Kunnamkulam until 1863 when he became the Principal of the Cambridge Nicholson Institute (Diocesan College), Cottayam.

He was consecrated as bishop in 1879 and served as the first Bishop of Travancore and Cochin. He is buried at Whittlesey Cemetery.
